Monday, September 12, 2022 - 11:21
B.Green project had its final event in Tallinn on 2-3 September. On the first day, the project results and successes were presented in a seminar including an interesting panel discussion “Towards greener cities”. The topics of the first day summarised the main idea of the B.Green project – how to stress green environment in city planning, how to foresee the impact of different decisions on green urban environment and how to include citizens and make them part of their neighbourhood through sustainable urban planning and urban greenery. During the second day there was several public events at Tallinn pilot area “Putukaväil”.
B.Green project piloted several activities both in Helsinki and Tallinn which gave tools to plan city areas more sustainable by having a specific focus on urban greenery. In Helsinki, the activities were implemented in Kalasatama area, which is an old harbour and industrial area, but now developed as a residential area. The activities in Kalasatama focused especially on utilisation of digital tools.
In Tallinn pilot area, the activities focused on a corridor which is going through old industrial areas, railways as well as residential areas. The corridor is developed as an important urban greenery which increases the variety of vegetation as well as pollinators and other insects in urban environment. At the same time, the aim is to create a space for people to enjoy urban greenery and to get together in green environment.
B.Green Projet Manager in Tallinn, Mai Andersson says that: “allotment garden pilot was one of the actions during the project which gave a great opportunity to offer a space for local people to enjoy the green corridor, which we call as Pollinator Highway and as locally we say Putukaväil”.
Indeed, Putukaväil is the corridor which aims to bring green urban space for people to enjoy and meet. Mai continues following: “during the project we have implemented environmental installations with local artist which aimed to bring volume and value for the pollinator highway. We wish that installations will become as a nice relaxation, meeting or stopping spots for people who are moving along the pollinator highway.”
Mai also told that Tallinn has been nominated as European Green Capital 2023. The B.Green project is one of the flagship projects during this year. B.Green had also a great impact on getting the status for Tallinn as European Green Capital.
B.Green project has compiled their working process, knowledge and lessons learned in a handbook. May you be interested in to know how to develop cities greener? Have a look at the handbook!
