Discussion: Should recreation in a landscaped and developed natural environment be available free of charge

Time: 24 February, 2021, 10:00 to 12:00
Place: Online
We will discuss a highly topical issue at the moment – the sustainable management of nature trails and natural heritage sites.
Should entrance fees be introduced for public landscaped nature trails?
What are the possible management mechanisms?
Is there a need for innovation in tourism management?

We use the ecosystem services when searching for well-being in nature. Are we entitled to these services for free? Often, places where people take special delight in nature and to which they are happy to return again are located in protected nature areas; moreover, people expect easy access, safety, comfort and amenities in such places. How to protect the unique natural heritage in the long run, while allowing the public to enjoy and explore it in an environmentally friendly way?

Would those representatives of Latvian society who actively use landscaped and developed nature trails be ready to participate with co-payment in the establishment and maintenance of such trails?

We will invite representatives of the parties interested and involved in nature tourism to join the discussion.
The discussion will be moderated by Andris Klepers, Associate Professor of Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, Doctor of Geography and HESPI researcher.
A detailed program of the event will be published shortly.
